Majority of Hungarians demand information on Olympic and Paralympic Games before considering organising the event

Public opinion poll by Závecz Research reveals that two thirds of the country’s adult population and three quarters of the Budapest residents wish to be informed about what it would mean for Hungarians to organise the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Polling company Závecz Research was commissioned by the Hungarian Olympic Committee (MOB) to conduct a representative survey between 20 and 24 October 2024 in Budapest and nationally on the possibility of the organising of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in the Hungarian capital.

MOB recently approached Budapest with a partnership proposal. The Hungarian Olympic family requests that before the Olympic organisation can be seriously considered the Budapest municipality should join the informative phase offered by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to the interested parties (not candidates, not applicants). The decision is therefore not about organising the Olympics or applying for the Olympics.

The survey revealed that 61% of people in Budapest would like to see thorough information and assessment before deciding on an Olympic commitment.

12% take a stronger stance, saying it is in the country's best interests to host the Olympics. However, the latter's intention can only be realised if Budapest participates in the IOC's preliminary consultation process.

Overall, 73% of Budapest residents, almost three quarters of them, are in favour of launching a process of collective reflection and consultation on the Olympic Games in Budapest, based on a wide range of information and perspectives. The share of this group in the country as a whole is 64%, with national support for a thorough information process almost two-thirds.
