Water polo explained simply

Three-time Hungarian Olympic champion water polo trainer Dr Dénes Kemény wrote a simple, easy to understand explanation of water polo rules that is available now for everyone.

Water polo is an excellent game played and enjoyed by many all over the world. As the Paris Olympics are approaching, it is important to understand the rules of this sport so fans can enjoy the matches.

Although there is a detailed explanation of rules of water polo on Fina’s website, the nearly 400-page book takes considerable time to read.

Dr Dénes Kemény, lecturer at the Hungarian University of Sports Science, former water polo trainer of the Hungary team, who has won three Olympic gold medals as a head coach, has now made an easy-to-understand explanation of water polo rules illustrated by photos and videos. It is a must-read for anyone who has difficulties understanding this excellent sport.

“It is a general problem that most people do not understand the reasons for decisions made by water polo referees”, explains Dénes Kemény. “It is no wonder because a lot of action happens under the water. Although there is a detailed explanation of rules on Fina’s website, it is quite long. That is why I and my colleagues have decided to compile a simple rule explanation that takes only fifteen minutes to read. I hope this will help everyone to understand and enjoy water polo not only at the upcoming Paris Olympics but in the future as well.”

The file, which can be downloaded here, clarifies issues such as number of players, match and period duration, fouls, advantage, shots, ball possession, team timeout and the like.

The explanation of rules was made by Dr Dénes Kemény and video analyst Zsolt Csapliczky, and it was supervised by former referee Mladen Rak, president of the Executive Committee of the World Water Polo Referees’ Association (WWR) Boris Margeta and current student of the Hungarian University of Sports Science, Patrick Almási.
