A day-off, but not for everyone

Thursday was a well-deserved rest for most teams at the European Universities European Championship, but due to the tournament schedule, six matches were still played. While some took the opportunity to explore the beauty of Budapest, others had to take to the court.

Hungary’s capital, Budapest, is one of Europe’s most popular sightseeing destinations. The host university, the Hungarian University of Sports Science, is located on the Buda side of the Danube River, near the historic Castle District. On Thursday, guided tours were organized to this area and its surroundings, attracting considerable interest. The Buda Castle and its vicinity were a hit with everyone. Of course, teams that did not play that day didn’t spend all their time there. The square in front of the Koltai Jenő Sports Centre, which features a beer terrace and various activities, was bustling all day long.

Volleyball action continued as well, with placement round matches and games played for 9-16th places taking place in the lower bracket. The host university’s teams had a rest day since they will compete in Friday’s quarterfinals, so spectator numbers were slightly lower in the arena. Nevertheless, several matches turned out to be real thrillers, with tightly contested battles.

Women’s matches for 9th–16th Place, semifinals:

  • University of Bergen (NOR) vs. Masaryk University (CZE): 0:3 (12:25, 23:25, 22:25)
