Péter Szájer re-elected as technical committee member at World Aquatics

Péter Szájer, an assistant professor at Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUSS), is beginning his second term at World Aquatics.

A source of pride for Hungary and Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUSS)!
Dr Péter Szájer, assistant professor at the Department of Swimming and Aquatic Sports, has been re-elected to the Technical Committee of World Aquatics. His new mandate is valid until 2029.

"My re-election became official on Tuesday, although the various appointments most likely took place during the World Championships in Singapore this summer," said the 39-year-old expert when asked. He has been a member of the World Aquatics Technical Committee since the summer of 2022.

Over the past few years, he has gained significant experience and has developed a clear understanding of the direction the sport is heading in terms of rule changes.

"A good example is the change regarding backstroke finishes — now swimmers are allowed to be completely submerged when touching the wall. In my view, swimming is governed by practical rules that prioritize the interests of the athletes," he explained., “Another major change in recent years has been the expansion of events. For instance, both men and women can now compete in the 800 and 1500-meter freestyle, meaning full gender parity across all events. Additionally, there’s a strong possibility that the 50-meter races will be added to the Olympic programme. That would shake things up even at the age-group level, as athletes would face new demands in training — and of course, more medals would be up for grabs. If this happens, swimmers’ Olympic schedules could expand even further beyond the current nine-day format. We might even see the 2027 World Championships in Budapest serve as a test event for these innovations — and naturally, we’re hopeful that will be the case.”

When he was first appointed to World Aquatics, Péter Szájer mentioned that his university duties are important to him, and that he would continue teaching there.

"This is still true, I love working at HUSS," emphasized Péter Szájer. "Although I also work for the Hungarian Swimming Federation, I am of course happy to carry out the tasks entrusted to me at HUSS, and I share my experiences from organizing events in Tokyo, Paris, and other international competitions with TF students."
